Alloy steel 1215 , also called EN1A or 1.0715, is a free-machining low-carbon alloy steel. It contains added sulfur and phosphorus that make chips break easily during cutting, allowing faster CNC machining and smoother surface finishes. It is not heat-treatable to high strength but can be case-hardened or plated. CNC shops use it for high-volume turned parts like shafts, pins, screws, nuts, fittings, and bushings where machinability and cost matter more than ultimate strength.

No secondary operation suitable for functional components, jigs, fixtures, and internal parts where cosmetic appearance is secondary to dimensional accuracy.

Quick post-fabrication process that passes a controlled flame over acrylic (PMMA) cut edges, melting the surface micro-layer to produce a crystal-clear, glossy, transparent edge. Fast and cost-effective for acrylic sheet edges produces optical clarity on cut borders without the labor of hand polishing. Ideal for display cases, signage, and acrylic enclosures.

Post-fabrication chemical process that exposes transparent plastic parts (acrylic, PC, PETG) to solvent vapor, melting and smoothing the surface micro-layer to dramatically improve optical clarity and gloss. Removes machining lines and produces crystal-clear transparent parts — essential for prototype lenses, light guides, display windows, fluidic chambers, and medical components requiring optical transparency.

Vapor Polished

Post-fabrication spray painting in any custom color (matte, satin, gloss, metallic) followed by screen printing or pad printing for logos, labels, buttons, and graphics. Applied over a primed plastic surface for uniform color and adhesion. Allows custom fabricated plastic parts to match production aesthetics widely used for control panels, instrument faces, enclosures, and marketing/showcase components requiring exact brand color and graphic printing.

Post-fabrication sanding with progressively finer grit sandpaper (typically 240–600 grit) produces a uniform low-gloss matte non-reflective surface. Hides machining marks, scratches, and surface inconsistencies while providing a soft tactile feel. Used for HDPE, UHMW, and nylon components where a durable, non-glare, fingerprint-resistant matte appearance is desired for industrial and functional parts.

  • Why is 1215 called free-machining steel?

    1215 contains added sulfur (~0.30%) and phosphorus (~0.06%) that act as chip breakers. These additives make the material cut more easily, produce short broken chips instead of long stringers, and leave a smooth surface finish. This allows faster cutting speeds and longer tool life.

  • Can 1215 steel be heat-treated?

    1215 is not hardenable by conventional quenching and tempering because of its low carbon content. It can be case-hardened (carburized) to achieve a mild surface hardness, but the core remains soft. For high-strength parts, use 4140, 4340, or 16MnCr5 instead.

  • What is the difference between 1215 and 12L14?

    12L14 is the leaded version of 1215. The added lead (~0.15–0.35%) gives even better machinability — faster cutting, smoother finish, and less tool wear. However, lead is toxic and restricted in some applications. 1215 is the non-leaded, more environmentally friendly option.

  • What tolerances can be held on 1215?

    Cold-drawn 1215 bar stock already has tight dimensional tolerances (±0.025 mm on diameter). CNC turning can hold ±0.01 mm on turned diameters and ±0.05 mm on lengths. The material machines very consistently, making it ideal for high-volume tight-tolerance parts.

  • Does 1215 steel rust?

    Yes, 1215 is not stainless and will rust when exposed to moisture. Finished parts are commonly protected with zinc plating, nickel plating, black oxide, oil, or paint. Cold-drawn 1215 has a smooth surface that takes plating well. Store raw bars in dry conditions.
